True or false: Starfish have brains.Well, at long last, snow has found its way to my corner of England.
It's a blizzard here, not much coverage, but looking out the window tells a story; snow is falling sideways right now, it's drifting something fierce wherever there's a sheltered corner, but at most it's a few inches everywhere else.
And what did our dear County Council not do? Right. They didn't grit the main north-south road through this side of their county linking some of their biggest towns and goes right through the town that houses a depot for their gritting trucks.
So I, living only five short miles away from work, was obliged to at least attempt to get into work.
It was only the sense of accomplishment of having made it here, and the hard work we put in along the way, that made any of this worthwhile. At all.
I spent the better part of an hour with my feet buried in the side of the road forcing a dairy van, all one and a half tons of produce on board, from sliding side-ways into the ditch below me. I kept that van straight so it could get traction for three hundred yards up a snow-covered slope before any of the other drivers on the road thought 'oh, maybe we should go help that guy push so the rest of us can get up the hill too!'
This became a game of 'luckily/unluckily' very quickly.
Luckily, my heroism didn't go to waste, and seven other burly men jumped out and helped get it the rest of the way.
Unluckily for the van driver, though, he broke his van doing the last bit.
Luckily a tractor appeared with towing gear and a plow ready and willing.
Unluckily our car was still stopped on the road several hundred yards back.
Luckily the big man's an absolute legend and drove up the rest of the hill without getting stuck.
Unluckily I still had to push to keep him out of the ditch just like the van.
So! That was fun. I was so damn happy to have reached the top of the hill that I'm still smiling now, over an hour later. I'm also happily sitting in my t-shirt and jeans while everyone else around me has three layers on, since my blood got pumping so much from all the excercise and I'm temporarily immune to cold.
Hope everyone has a happy Snow Day! I'll be here, working away, making the gears turn.
Oh, and a cheap sled is all I need to get home again, too, so don't worry about that

Until next time!
