Now... I don't know how many on DA actually read this, although it's been noted that quite a few who aren't do on a regular basis.
I have mentioned in past posts (long time ago, even the most recent one... I'm slow to update, so sue me) that there was an 'event' in the coming month that I couldn't tell you about until later...
I'll tell you now.
I, me, myself, this writer, Dominic 'Nick' Evans... I've been nominated to go, and been officially invited to go to the Queen's Summer Garden Party in Buckingham Palace because of my Services to the Community.
To explain a little; some of you may know that I work a volunteer job, but most won't know what it is. I helped set up, build and now staff a local community shop and post-office.
This may not seem like much, but in England small villages more than five miles out from *anywhere* aren't very well equipped with facilities. The most my little home had was a local church for two years.
When the last shop closed down, our village sank. People started treating it as a dormitory village, a place to sleep and nothing more. Worse, all of the elderly, a noticeable proportion of the village, nearly a third in fact, are unable to make a ten mile round-trip to get their eggs, milk and bread every few days.
Some of us decided to do something. With a lot of help we managed to get grants and raise a huge amount of money through donations, and built ourselves a new shop. We run it as volunteers and even the new postmistress puts in a huge amount of volunteer time despite only being payed for three hours a day.
I've worked there since it was a hole in the ground; I dug trenches for electrical cable, I carried hods for the builders, made tea and food for workers, I teamed up with a couple of good people to move in the fridges, chillers and freezers that even a small shop needs... And after that I taught people how to use the till software, found out how to keep track of stock and run reports (I don't let anyone know how much I actually know or they'd pester me for all of it and my bosses would put me down for more work). And every week I put in a shift on Saturday, from lunch until close, so that everybody else can just go out and enjoy their weekend.
To bring this to a close, we were noticed in all of this, and by somebody who has a bit of clout. There's a retired military man in the village who, thanks to his previous position, can nominate other people to be recognised for their achievements in good causes.
So the postmistress and the assistant manageress and myself have been invited to the summer garden party for services to the community.
We go on the 22nd of July, and it's all very exciting ^^ I've just shelled out for a rather fetching suit, I may post a photo or two later... and I'm even going to cut my hair (shock, horror, gasp, I know.) for the occasion.
Zoe's all thrilled that she'll get to see my like that... I'm just worried that I'm going to make a fool of myself.
So yeah, that's the big news

I'm also dressing up for a different occasion too. On the 6th of July (next week, that is) I'm dressing up for a day of foolery as a travelling peddler from the year 1285 (generically the late 13th century) and spending the day with near on a hundred other people. We're putting on a show on Gold Hill in Shaftesbury to promote local business in the town.
All it entails is that we show up, set up stalls and shops etc. and act as if we're genuinely thirteenth century citizens of shaftesbury. To add to that we'll be putting on a little street theater with singing, dancing, a few fools, and there's going to be a march of the Nobles from the ruined Abbey, down the hill and then round and back up Gold Hill to finish at the Town Hall.
It's going to be fun, but I'm not allowed to take my camera, so any photos I can find will be posted, but I can't guarantee anything right now.
That's all for me, gotta run, FN!

::eDonots are on hold until after Project Holiday!!::
eDonuts are free, anyone can have one, you just have to ask and I'll do my best. I also give out e-Donuts when I feel like it, so your name could appear here at any time.
The catch is that I have no time on my hands. You get free art, but I don't put a deadline on when you'll get it ^^
Test my abilities, ne?

The ones I keep.

Change it affects all of us.
The question is: do we allow change to control our life, or, do we control change?
Unlike stories, in life there is no such thing as The End, neither is there The Beginning. There are millions of beginnings and endings. Every single moment has a story to tell, and the next and the next too. So in life you tell your story, then somebody else picks up when you can't go any further.
When a story finishes for another we are still here to tell that story to those whos story begins after ours. And that's the beauty of life.
I love you all.

You're an honest, hard working and loyal individual man. A good associate, a good friend and a great writer.
It's a pity we don't really get to talk as much as we used to, seeing as how you're busy and I can never remember.
I hope you have a great time at the Garden Party. Maybe schmooze a little? Tell Zoe to take pictures!
I wanna hear all about it when you get back from it and we sit down and chat. I'm proud of you man!

And I'm not exactly expecting to overly enjoy myself, but it's a real honour, and an opportunity that I'll be able to tell people about for the rest of my life. 'I went to the Palace to a garden party for people who were recognised for services to their community' it has a nice, formal sounding tone to it XD There might be booze, there might be some other really quite random people. I'm worried, however, that I might meet one or two born-agains who're also getting the same invitation (you never know the kind of people that might turn up for this event, I mean, I'm not exactly the most natural choice) and get into a discussion about why I'm a pledged pagan, why don't I believe, can they convince me otherwise... you know, that kind of thing.
But to be blunt about it, at first the idea terrified me... I'm one of those that brushes up well, but you have to do a lot of brushing. My current status is long hair to just below my shoulders, a thin and wild beard and battered jeans, t-shirt and my hat. But the suit I've just bought, while not being too expensive for my modest budget, does something amazing... I might even have to post before and after shots...
Heh, when it comes to it, I'm not really all that hard-working. I wasn't exactly doing anything else on the days I worked on setting up the shop, so I jumped in on the ground floor, and the days I helped with the construction would have been spent not doing much else as well. The actual work I do at the shop is simple enough; serve customers, take orders, make small talk. My shift, saturday afternoon, is the quietest of the week. Midday until 6pm, plus I cash up and lock up, and because I'm familiar with all the systems, a big imposing man, and people seem to trust me, I work the shift without the mandatory second person. We always have two people on a shift or more, there're two tills and enough work usually for two plus another person doing stock, cleaning and shelving too. But when it's me, people seem to overlook that, I stack, stock and serve with equal facility, so everybody else gets the afternoon off. I think the hardest work I have to do is when one of the senior village volunteers comes in for some till training, that's a little tricky since most don't have a clue what computers can do...
Meh, and the day-at-the-fair costume thing is for kicks, with me, since I'm not doing a speaking part XD I happen to know the person who's organising it, and when she mentioned it to me I just said 'I'm in' without thinking. I never go back once I've said that, but luckily I've not had cause to regret it, my costume looks so authentic that I'm practically a different person when I put my normal clothes back on ^^
Anyway, I must go, it's gone midnight and I have work in the morning. Catch you later,
FN

Leap in the room, hit the emergency shut-off valve, beat up two bad-guys, run for the stairs, grab the girl and hurl us both out the upper story window! You have got to be kidding me... That's your big plan?

Then yes, I probably brought this on myself.
Solution? I should never help people that were the commander of the English troops stationed in Northern Ireland for the last ten years that they occupied that territory. They tend to be grateful in unexpected and alarming ways.

Just try to relax (despite being in a suit. I don't really enjoy 'dressing up' for most occasions either) and get through the night if you don't think you'll enjoy it.
And yea, that does give you a little bragging rights that you were invited and attended.
Don't forget, that most heroes are everyday people. You just happen to be one of 'em.

it's always good to see yourself in a suit.
I HATE wearing those, but I look so DAMN good in them XDDD
Oh yeh, if you get your hair cut, get a before picture... who knows when you'll get it that long again. My brother's still crying over his long hair he cut off a few years ago, but now as a lawyer he can't afford it to let it grow back that long and he regrets he didn't make enough pictures XDDD
You truly deserve the recognition for doing such incredible charity for the elderly and you never fail to amaze me. I always knew you're volunteering somewhere but I had no idea WHAT you're doing.

I know that we are worlds apart
so all I can offer to you are words
honest ones, words from my heart
to close the gap between our worlds
"And for the record: I love Jake with all my heart.
